Your Right To Have Straight Teeth
On Monday, January 16th, the United States honors and celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” He was a leader in the advancement of civil rights in the United States using nonviolent civil disobedience. He received the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He also said “A right delayed is a right denied.” While King’s words apply to the socially to our society, can we also apply this to your teeth? Is it the right time to do the right thing for your teeth and overall health by addressing your crooked teeth?
Did you know that by delaying your right to straight teeth you could be jeopardizing your health? When you care for and correct your crooked teeth you help reduce the risk of periodontal teeth. Teeth that are not aligned properly in your mouth create what dentists call “malocclusion.” Left untreated, malocclusion can lead to periodontal disease and create abnormal amounts of stress on teeth and jaw, which leads to premature wear. Severe periodontal infection, if untreated, may increase the risk for atherosclerosis-induced conditions such as coronary heart disease and stroke, complication of diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and respiratory issues.
Straight teeth are healthier teeth. Straight and properly aligned teeth can help you avoid the negative effects of periodontal disease. You will experience healthier gums. With good oral hygiene, the chances of having plaque retention, tooth decay, and periodontal disease can be reduced. You will have decreased risk of abnormal wear and trauma.
